Keep Columbus Beautiful

Columbus city leaders are so supportive of the Columbus Garden Club in so many ways. Once again, the City Council urged all citizens to join in the annual citywide clean-up campaign by issuing a proclamation that Trash-Off Days 2025 are April 2-5. Trash Off Days are just a part of the bigger Keep Columbus Beautiful campaign held in conjunction with Keep Texas Beautiful and Great American Clean-Up campaigns.

Individuals, students, organizations, church groups...are invited to participate at any time during the Keep Columbus Beautiful events:

  • Spring clean-up activities of Keep Columbus Beautiful are centered around Trash-Off running from March 1st - May 31st.

  • Fall clean-up, called Fall Sweep, runs October 1st - November 15th.

Create your own projects or do something on your own. All volunteers should track their hours and report them so that Columbus can report all citizens' volunteer hours to the state and national campaigns. Individuals may report hours directly to Columbus Garden Club by texting or calling 979-733-4343.

Keep Columbus Beautiful Volunteer Opportunities

Activities you may choose to participate in during Trash-Off or Fall Sweep include:

  • Pick up litter in parks and on roadside and highway ditches, etc. Adopt a spot for all year round!

  • Mow a vacant lot

  • Help a neighbor with a yard or home beautification project

  • Plant tree(s) or flowers

  • Clean up a garden (like at our workdays for the Square plant pots and pocket gardens)

  • Paint a fence

  • Demo old houses and buildings

  • If it makes Columbus more beautiful, it counts!

Trash Off Day Events

Local citizens as individuals or as part of a various organizations' service projects clean-up and beautify the Columbus community. Various organizations schedule special days to make cleaning up easier...remember to keep track of your efforts collecting the items and disposing of them, then report your hours to ensure Columbus gets credit:

  • Trash Off Volunteer Registration - First Saturday in April: come by to pick up supplies including trash bags, orange vest, gloves, and grabber as well as give us your information so we can contact you at the end of May to gather the hours you contributed! The volunteer hours get reported to state and national programs and sometimes Columbus wins awards and recognition for how awesome our citizens and town are!

  • Trash Off Days with City Maintenance Yard Large Item Disposal - First Wednesday through Saturday in April: (weekdays 8a-12p and 1p-5p, Sat 8a-12p) - Bring the following to 1427-B Montezuma Street:  washers, dryers, recliners, mattresses, tree limbs, fencing materials, lumber, household appliances, bicycles, exercise equipment, and more. Refrigerators and freezers will be accepted only if a technician has removed the freon.  Hazardous items are NOT accepted including pesticides, chemicals, paint, tires, batteries, televisions, computers, chemicals, fertilizers, poisons, or pharmaceuticals. Citizens are urged to properly store these items until the next hazardous collection day. Save these items until Columbus announces a hazardous waste disposal event.

  • The last day of May is the last chance to report any volunteer hours by texting or calling 979-733-4343! Hours are reported to the state and national campaigns and help earn points towards grants to improve our town.

Fall Sweep Participation

Local citizens, as individuals or as part of a various organizations' service projects, get a second annual opportunity to clean-up and beautify the Columbus community. From October 1 - November 15, Columbus citizens target litter along our streets, parks, highways, and natural areas. Last year during Keep Texas Beautiful, 10,000+ Fall Sweep volunteers removed almost 1 million pounds of litter.

Keep Columbus Beautiful would love to have your help this year. Simply find a way to make Columbus more beautiful such as in the volunteer opportunities list above. Check our Columbus Garden Club Facebook page or Keep Columbus Beautiful Facebook page for how to request free supply kits that include orange vest, trash bags, gloves, and grabber.

To volunteer and report your service projects and hours, call or text the Columbus Garden Club at 979-733-4343.
